Job Description for a Skilled Maintenance Worker
Skilled maintenance workers are responsible for maintenance within the airport grounds. Duties range from forecourt servicing to keeping the runways in good condition. During winter time the main focus of the work is on runway and taxiing area maintenance. When there is no snow the emphasis is on cleaning tasks and work on the airport buildings. With the exception of Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, skilled maintenance workers are also responsible for their airport’s rescue capabilities.
Maintenance job titles include electrician, heating, lighting and ventilation fitter, carpenter, communications fitter and painter.
Maintenance Training
At the beginning of their job contract, maintenance workers are given a basic training course in maintenance work organized by Avia College. After this, further vocational training is provided in follow-up courses for maintenance workers and drivers. There are also initiation courses in equipment maintenance and heating, lighting and ventilation courses. In addition, those employed in supervisory duties undertake basic and follow-up courses for shift foremen.
