
AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER, Basic Degree
The basic qualification for air traffic controllers is a second degree vocational examination following 120 weeks of study (wos). According to Ministry of Education regulation 216/2001 the qualification requires a single course of study, the air traffic controller syllabus. The title of the qualification is air traffic controller.
Studies are
divided into three parts; general studies, vocational studies and
discretionary studies.
University entrance qualifications or previous
study at another vocational training establishment will be accepted in
lieu of general studies and discretionary studies (total 30 wos).
Vocational studies are obligatory for everyone and they consist of 90
wos. These include 20 wos of on-the-job training. Lessons are divided
into 30 wos of basic air navigation competence, 20 wos of basic air
traffic services studies and 40 wos devoted to air traffic management.

The course includes 1.5 wos of study guidance and 2 wos of thesis work. A study week consists of 40 hours of student work.
Vocational studies consist of subjects relating to actual air traffic services, as well as aviation theory, meteorology, communications, flight information services, flight navigation, aviation regulations and administration, IT, air rescue services as well as English and Swedish. The courses consist of theory, simulator and on-the-job sessions.
