Purpose of Basic Air Traffic Control Training

The general purpose of this training is to create a professional who commands the tasks of his trade, for whom safety, responsibility, willingness to serve and cost awareness are important. He or she will be willing to cooperate and capable of solving problems. Those who have completed the course will have the language skills required for air traffic control work (Finnish, Swedish, English) as well as sufficient competence in information technology to be able to handle the increasingly computerized tasks of the industry. Those who have satisfactorily completed the basic training, including the practical work, may apply for an air traffic controller’s licence from the licensing department of the Finnish Civil Aviation Authority. Qualifications for various air traffic control tasks are entered into the licence document. Certification is granted separately for each air traffic control task and department. The course provides the knowledge and skills to operate as a tower controller or approach controller as well as the qualifications for further training for other duties within the industry. Course graduates also have the basic qualifications for international air traffic control duties.

Studies for the basic professional qualifications are based on ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) and Eurocontrol recommendations on training.
