Mid night sun in Lapland via Helsinki
Passengers can fly to Lapland this summer using several airlines: airBaltic has started up new routes, and Finnair as well as Finncomm fly to Lapland Airports network every day. The year-round seasonal variation in traffic to Lapland lays the foundation for increasing passenger numbers.
As it is now summer in Lapland, there is light throughout the day and night and the midnight sun shines bright. There are many activities to choose from to while away your holiday; some of the most popular are river adventures and canoe trips. Summer is now the object of attention in terms of tourism to Lapland.
“The winter product is already known extensively, but awareness of summer products should be improved. Before Christmas travel became popular among British tourists, one of the highlights of travel to Lapland was the midnight sun. The goal is to get summer and winter products on an equal footing through cooperation with airports, airlines and local tourism entrepreneurs,” says Thomas Kingelin, Finavia’s Sales Manager.
Kingelin believes that the greatest growth potential in tourism to Lapland is currently in Central Europe. “The greatest potential for passengers is from Germany, Russia and France.”
The North is near
Many summer travellers are seeking nature's peace and tranquillity in the north. In contrast, for example, Kittilä in Lapland also boasts more energetic activities, such as mountain bike riding, canoeing and fishing.
Kittilä Airport has, in addition to excellent cooperation, an excellent geographical location because the airport is a short distance to two different tourist centres at the gateway to the fells. Levi and Ylläs are located under half an hour's distance from the airport, explains Kari Tohmo, Kittilä’s Airport Manager.
Finavia is investing in increasing awareness of Lapland in cooperation with tourism actors in northern Finland. The six airports in northern Finland – Ivalo, Enontekiö, Kittilä, Rovaniemi, Kemi-Tornio, and Kuusamo – make up a tight network of airports known collectively as Lapland Airports.
The new Lapland Airports look can already be seen at three airports in the region: Kittilä, Kuusamo and Rovaniemi. The new look will be completed at Kemi Airport next and the others later.
