The Helsinki Airport terminal extension opened for the use of long-haul flight passengers on 11 December 2009.
In August 2006, Finavia launched the construction of the extension to the Helsinki Airport's terminal 2 and the new baggage handling centre. The investment is the biggest in Finavia's history.
The total cost estimate of the project is EUR 143 million, of which over half will be invested in the new baggage handling centre. The new extension will comprise a total of 39,000 m².
The two lower floors of the three storey terminal extension have been designated for use for baggage handling, bus ports, technical premises and as a fire station.
The new baggage handling facility will in future handle most of the airport's international baggage. A baggage conveyor linking the other terminals via a tunnel will be constructed in the extension.
Terminal 2 is being extended to meet the dramatic growth in transfer traffic between Asia and Europe. The Asian traffic will diversify the offering of European destinations direct from Helsinki Airport and increase the number of flights to the most popular destinations.
The entire additional capacity created by the extension will need to be taken into use immediately. Once the extension is completed, Helsinki Airport will have eight jetways intended for wide-bodied aircraft instead of the current five. The new jetways will be able to accommodate Airbus A340 and A350 aircraft.
