The right way to pack

General security guidelines

The regulations concerning prohibited substances and items are quite abundant and detailed. On these pages we have collected only a few general security guidelines.

For more information: Complete list of prohibited items and substances in Finnish Civil Aviation Authority's website.

Prohibited substances and items

Flammable, toxic or corrosive substances such as lighter fluids, fireworks, ski wax removers or more than 70% vol. alcohol are prohibited on aircraft. Leave these items at home or at your destination.

Alcoholic beverages over 21 per cent but less than 70 per cent by volume may be carried in checked baggage with a total net quantity not exceeding 5 L.

Matches and cigarette lighters

You may only take one box of safety matches or one lighter on board, and it must be carried in your pocket. Such items must not be packed in your hand baggage or in your check-in baggage. Torch cigar lighters and reserve fuel tanks for lighters are forbidden on board the airplane.

Liquids (aerosols, cosmetics, food)

Shampoo, cream, gel, aerosol, mascara, toothpaste and antibacterial hand gel are concidered as liquids. Canned and frozen foods are also considered as liquids.

Only a small number of liquids, gels and aerosols in containers of less than 100 millilitres may be taken on board as hand baggage. These travel-size containers must be packed in a single transparent and resealable bag (e.g. a Minigrip plastic bag) with a maximum volume of one litre. As an example, an authorized bag of this kind could hold 3-5 travel-size toiletry items, mascara and a tube of toothpaste.

Pack all larger containers holding liquids (over 100 ml) at home in your baggage to be checked. Aerosol cans (such as hairspray) must have a secure cap covering the spray valve. Aerosol cans without a cap may not be packed in checked baggage.

Do not pack any aerosols or hand sanitizers in cans larger than 500 ml in size. Their carriage on aircraft is prohibited.

Medicines and baby food for use during the trip may be carried as hand baggage. Carry medicines in their original packaging, along with the prescription from the pharmacy.

Sharp objects

Objects such as scissors, corkscrews, knives, metal knitting needles and other items that are sharp or used for cutting must be packed in your check-in baggage. Small nail scissors and wooden or plastic knitting needles may be taken on board as hand baggage.

Baggage restrictions concerning quantity and size

In general, passengers may bring into the cabin one piece of luggage measuring 55 x 40 x 20 cm. On scheduled flights and charter flights, the maximum allowed weight is 8 kg.

Baggage restrictions in business class may vary according to airline.

Baggage going into the cargo hold

The weight restrictions on baggage going into the cargo hold as well as the terms and conditions applicable to oversized and irregularly shaped items vary according to airline. For instance skis and golf clubs are irregularly shaped items.

A fee is charged for excess baggage

Airlines charge a fee for excess baggage. Heavy baggage may also be sent as air freight.
