Annual report of the CAA 2003

ICAO Prepares Emission Reduction Measures

International environmental aviation work concentrated on preparing for the conference of the environmental committee (CAEP) of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to be held in February 2004. The most important area of inquiry concerned the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from aircraft on international routes. Under the Kyoto agreement the relevant measures should be applied through the ICAO. The ICAO has examined emissions charges, emissions trading and voluntary agreements as ways to reduce emissions or slow their increase. The CAA has followed these inquiries through the environmental committee of the European Civil Aviation Congress, among others.

CAA’s annual air traffic emission calculations are used in Finland’s official reporting of greenhouse gas emissions.
