An environmental permit application was made jointly with
the defence administration for Utti airport, and a supplementary
application was made for Turku airport. A comprehensive
reply was drawn up in conjunction with the defence forces
following a statement and remark concerning an application
for Tampere-Pirkkala airport.
The regional environmental centre assessed the need for
environmental permits for central Finnish and Lappish airports.
Four permit applications were made by the end of 2004 and
it was learned that applications for six other airports
should be made.
During the present round of permit applications both civil
and military aviation activities and environmental impacts
have been considered. Cooperation with the military authorities
works well following changes to environmental protection
regulations in 2003 which clarified areas of responsibility.
The application process has highlighted the limits of activities
at aviation sites to which the permits relate. The CAA feels
that the overall operations of an airport, as far as these
permits are concerned, are extremely narrow, and that companies
engaged in peripheral activities such as supplying fuel
should apply for their own permits.
