HELSINKI-VANTAA GROWS AS A GATEWAY AIRPORT
Helsinki-Vantaa’s role continued to strengthen as a transit airport between Asia and Europe. The number of Asian gateway passengers rose during 2005 by as much as 22 per cent, and overall too, gateway passenger numbers increased by 10 per cent.
Gateway passengers are international transfer travellers who arrive from abroad and continue their journey abroad.
Finnair expanded its Asian network by opening a route to Canton and increasing flights to its present destinations. This has resulted in Helsinki-Vantaa’s becoming a leading airport in northern Europe in terms of direct flights to Asia.
