Since 2009, passengers have had the opportunity to donate coins left over from their travels in green Pastille receptacles designed by the Finnish designer Eero Aarnio. Bottles left at the security control are recycled in exchange for money, which then becomes part of the contribution as well. By the end of 2016, the joint Finavia and Plan fundraiser had collected a total of EUR 200,000. The funds gathered are used to cover the daily needs of children in developing countries.
There are five bright green Pastille collection receptacles at Helsinki Airport, four of which are found in the gate area and one in Arrivals Hall 2B. Pastilles can be found also at Oulu and Kokkola-Pietarsaari airports.
Since June 2011, passengers have been able to place their empty bottles and cans in Plan collection receptacles, from which they are taken to be recycled by the Finnish bottle return system. The collection receptacles are located in front of security control. Proceeds from the returns are donated to Plan International Finland, which promotes the welfare of children all over the world.
