Finavia is improving the infrastructure of Helsinki Airport runway 22R/04L, or runway 3. Runway 3 will be out of use for three weeks, which will affect the direction in which planes land and take off.

With the primary take off runway, runway 3, out of use, planes will take off from runway 1. As an additional exception to normal operations, runway 2 (15/33) may be used for southbound jet plane take off during the busiest hours.

More aircraft noise can be detected in northern Helsinki. With northern and eastern winds, noise from landing planes may be detected in Espoo and western Vantaa.

The work starts on 18 August and ends on 6 September. The runway is completely closed until 2 p.m. on 2 September. After that, the runway will be in use from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. until 6 September. The runway will be re-opened on 7 September.

Air traffic is expected to operate normally during the work.

Runway 3 is being renovated to ensure air traffic safety. Among other things, Finavia will re-surface rapid-exit taxiways, renew parts of the instrument landing system (ILS) and repair runway surface water protections such as dams and piping.
