Finavia’s climate programme

The objective of Finavia's climate programme is to completely eliminate the carbon dioxide emissions caused by our own operations at all company's airports.

The carbon dioxide emissions of airports are caused primarily by lighting and other electricity use, cooling and energy consumption of vehicles. These emissions we have reduced in all of our airports by various ways.

Strong increase of renewable forms of energy, the origins of electricity and heat, improving energy efficiency in all operations and compensating the emissions in the market form the core of our actions.

The emissions of Helsinki Airport have already been cut out, making it an officially carbon neutral airport since 2017. Other airports became carbon neutral in the spring of 2019 - over a year before the objective.

Finavia is committed to working persistently to ensure our airports do not increase carbon dioxide emissions in 2020. This means that, in addition to minimising our own emissions, we commit to reducing emissions through the compensation mechanism in countries struggling with environmental issues, such as India.

It is now more important than ever that companies set an example in the reduction of emissions. Environmental considerations are also increasingly present in the choices of consumers. That is why it is important that air traffic operators join the front lines of cutting down the emissions of their operations.

In fact, air traffic is the first industry with a global emission management system. The mechanism named CORSIA, developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization ICAO, guarantees that air traffic emissions will not increase after the year 2020 even if the passenger numbers do.

Finavia is one of the key players in the joint commitment of European airport operators to have 100 carbon neutral airports in Europe by 2030. Finavia's airports comprise 20% of this goal.

In addition we want to enhance emission free air traffic. We are, for example financing the development and testing of the first electric aircraft in Finland
