Finavia has named Rovaniemi Airport the Airport of the Year 2024. The award was given for the airport’s significant development, maintaining an excellent customer experience and its key role in promoting tourism in Lapland.

“I would like to congratulate Rovaniemi Airport and all its employees on receiving the Airport of the Year award. The personnel at Rovaniemi Airport have been able to meet the demands of the increased number of passengers and keep the customer experience at a high level. In addition, Rovaniemi Airport is a great example of how cooperation with Finavia and the tourism and local stakeholders works in the long term,” says Finavia’s Jani Jolkkonen, who served as Senior Vice President, Airport Network until September 2025.

The demand for air traffic in Rovaniemi has increased significantly in recent years, and Rovaniemi Airport has become a significant international airport in recent years. In 2024, Rovaniemi Airport had 948,000 passengers, which is almost 30 per cent more than in the previous year.

Finavia has invested in the long-term development of Lapland’s airports so that the demand for tourism as well as the infrastructure and service level offered by the airport can develop at the same pace. Finavia has invested EUR 25 million in the development of Rovaniemi Airport in 2018–2020. In 2025, Finavia will invest an additional EUR 3 million in the extension of the airport’s departures hall. The aim of the latest investment is to improve the travel experience for passengers.

“For my part, I would like to express my gratitude to all those working at Rovaniemi Airport, who make a valuable contribution to smooth travel. We are eager to start the new winter season, which will be very busy in Rovaniemi. This recognition is meaningful for the airport, as it shows that we are doing the right things,” says Airport Manager Johan Juujärvi from Rovaniemi Airport.

Customer satisfaction at Rovaniemi Airport has been consistently high, and responsibility is a key part of the operations. Rovaniemi Airport has succeeded in maintaining and developing its infrastructure in the right proportion with the development of processes and operating methods despite the rapidly growing numbers of passengers.

“For us at Finavia, responsibility means taking into account the environment, people and how airports are managed and led. The staff at Rovaniemi Airport have done a great job at ensuring that each passenger has a good airport experience. As an employer, it is particularly important to us that the airport personnel are happy and that the airport has a strong culture of working together,” continues Jani Jolkkonen.

Airport of the Year award
