Helsinki Airport has a long and significant history as part of Finnish aviation and society. The completion of the airport’s 10-year development programme in 2023 provided a natural moment to share the airport’s story and its growth over the decades.
“We want to tell the unique story of the airport and highlight its significance as part of Finns’ connection to the rest of the world,” says Hanna Hämäläinen, Finavia’s Head of Passenger Experience Development at Helsinki Airport.
A journey from the 1950s to an international aviation hub
The walk-around miniature and exhibition introduce passengers to the fascinating history of Helsinki Airport, from the first flight in the 1950s to becoming an international air traffic hub.
Through images, stories and interviews, the people behind the airport come to life – employees, passengers and moments that have made Helsinki Airport more than just an airport: a gateway to the world and a symbol of returning home.
The exhibition was organised in cooperation with the Finnish Aviation Museum in three languages: Finnish, Swedish and English.
Culture and experiences enrich the airport experience
The history exhibition is part of Finavia’s long-term work to strengthen the comfort and experiences of the airport environment. Finavia’s cooperation with the Finnish National Opera and Ballet also supports the same goal, enabling passengers to enjoy opera and ballet performances for free at Helsinki Airport. In addition, Finavia’s partnership with the Finnish Aviation Museum in launching the New Aviation Museum emphasises the company’s commitment to preserving and highlighting the history and cultural heritage of Finnish aviation.
