Mariehamn airport is very much looking forward to the summer season. The number of flights to Stockholm will increase substantially and traffic will not be subject to a summer break this year.

In 2016, Nextjet will offer connections to Stockholm six days a week throughout the summer. The total weekly number of departures is 11. In addition, the current plan of Norra is to offer connections to Helsinki seven days a week, and the total weekly number of departures will be 13.

Focus on passenger comfort

Finavia has renovated the furniture of all customer facilities in the terminal as well as the lights in many facilities.

“First of all, we have wanted to make the terminal well-functioning and stylish for the passengers. A fully renovated duty free shop is now located at the centre of the departure lobby and the lobby has a direct view to the apron and runway. The shop selection includes well-known brands and local Åland delicacies”, says Tanja Sabel, Mariehamn Airport Manager.

We will open a new café in the terminal on Valentine’s Day. The 60 North Bar & Café will open in fully renovated facilities. The big terrace is the main change; it has a unique view to the apron and runway. The weather in Åland will become warm early in the spring, and the terrace is where you can see all arriving and departing flights at Mariehamn airport.

The customer base of 60 North Bar & Café will mainly consist of passengers of flights departing in the afternoon. The café is located outside the terminal's security check area, which means that everyone visiting the airport can use it. You can easily buy takeaway products from the airport. The menu of 60 North Bar & Café includes sandwiches, tapas products and pastries.

Finavia will continue to develop Mariehamn airport and to invest in it.

The major acquisition of the year will be introduced in July, i.e. the new fire truck of the airport fire and rescue services. Personal security check will already be renewed before the summer. The goal is to make security check more effective and functional in regard to Mariehamn airport's departing passengers and security check employees.

Last year, Finavia invested EUR 1.2 million in the airport infrastructure and in improving Mariehamn airport services. The apron’s new pavement is the single most extensive item. It will lengthen apron life by 15 years. The airport's backup aggregate automatics have also been renewed. It is important to make sure that the airport will have electricity in all circumstances.

We have also renewed the bird scare system. Sound cannons will be used for making sure that birds stay away from the runway.

As a result of cooperation with Shell Aviation, it is now possible to refuel aircraft from a refuelling vehicle at the airport. The vehicle will also increase the aircraft fuel capacity of the airport.

Passenger volume is increasing

The year 2015 was a good one for Mariehamn airport. The passenger volumes of routes departing from and arriving at Mariehamn airport increased by 14% from 2014. In domestic air traffic in December, the passenger volume increased as much as by 26% compared to 2014.
