“As with the entire development programme, the design and construction of the new terminal have been guided not only by the customer experience but also by the sustainable development goals that we are promoting with our sustainability programme,” says Henri Hansson, Director of Technology, Responsibility and Safety at Finavia.
Finavia's terminal extension reached a rating level of excellent, especially thanks to responsible land use and ecology, transport solutions and waste management. The company’s responsible material choices, energy use and efforts to take welfare into account also received high marks in the evaluation.
“With careful planning, we have been able to build an airport that is 30 per cent more energy efficient than regulations require. During construction, we have been able to take our energy efficiency goals into account both in terms of materials and energy solutions.
The Helsinki Airport Development Programme lasts from 2013 until 2023 and consists of three large subprojects. During the development programme, Finavia will invest over EUR 1 billion in a gate area serving Schengen passengers, a new terminal extension, including departure and arrivals halls, and a terminal and apron extension serving long-haul flights.
The West and South Piers and the Aukio plaza, which belong to the extension of the long-haul flight area, have already been certified as excellent.

BREEAM is an international method for assessing the overall sustainability of projects. In addition to the environmental sustainability of infrastructure and buildings, it also takes into account social and economic sustainability.
The BREEAM certificate is issued by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) Global Ltd, established in the UK in the 1920s. BRE aims to develop the built environment. In assessing the level of sustainability, BRE consider the entire life cycle of projects, from the planning phase to construction and from finishing works to commissioning. According to BRE, certified facilities improve well-being and support the sustainable use of natural resources.
