Offering the fastest connection between Finland and Southeastern Europe, the Croatian flag carrier is known for its flight safety, its commitment to the environment, and the high quality of its services. Here are five facts about one of the world’s safest airlines.

Since it was founded nearly 30 years ago, Croatia Airlines has steadily established its reputation for flight safety as well as for the quality of services and its professional staff.

The full-service carrier, which provides domestic and international air passenger and cargo transport services, contributes to the development of Croatian tourism. One third of all tourists arriving to Croatia by plane fly Croatia Airlines. There are excellent connections from the capital Zagreb, near which the company is headquartered, to Pula, Dubrovnik, Zadar and Split.

Starting May 21, the route between Helsinki and Zagreb will be flown three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

1. In July 1989, Zagreb Airlines – trading under the name Zagal – started operations using a single Cessna 402 aircraft on cargo services for UPS. A year later, after the country’s first democratic elections, Zagal changed its name to Croatia Airlines.

2. The Croatian War of Independence and the subsequent closure of the airspace over the country forced the airline to suspend operations. Following this short interruption, Croatia Airlines soon became a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in 1992.

3. From Helsinki, Croatia Airlines flies to Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar and Pula. The carrier plans to use two 100-seat Bombardier CRJ1000 aircraft to serve flights to and from the Finnish capital. Aside from the CRJ1000s, its current fleet of 14 aircraft is made up of the Airbus 319, Airbus 320 and Dash 8-Q400.

4. In a survey conducted in 2014, which included close to 500 airlines from around the world, the international specialized web portal AirlineRatings.com gave Croatia Airlines’ flight safety the highest rating of seven stars. The ranking recognized the company as one of the world’s safest airlines.

5. Croatia Airlines received a White Flag in 2015 for its contribution to the protection and conservation of purity of water areas. The award is given by the Global Underwater Awareness Association to companies and organizations that have made an extraordinary commitment to the preservation of seas, rivers and lakes, and have contributed to the raising of awareness on the global problem of seabed pollution.
