With the addition of the new routes, Finavia airports will offer a total of 163 international scheduled air connections to 103 international airports.
“Finland’s accessibility will be further strengthened in the upcoming winter season through new international routes. The growing interest among airlines reflects confidence in the development of demand for travel to Finland and supports the country’s overall international connectivity,” says Petri Vuori, Finavia’s Senior Vice President, Route Development.
Lapland airports set for another strong winter season
“Growth during the winter season will be driven particularly by Lapland’s airports, which will gain routes to a total of ten new destinations across Europe. The expanded airline offering reflects especially strong demand from Central Europe and the United Kingdom,” says Petri Vuori.
During the upcoming winter season, Rovaniemi Airport will be served by a total of 37 routes, Kittilä Airport by 15, Kuusamo Airport by nine, Ivalo Airport by eight and Kemi-Tornio Airport by two routes from Finland and abroad.
At the peak of the winter season, Rovaniemi Airport will have direct international connections to as many as 36 international airports. New scheduled routes to Rovaniemi will be launched from London Gatwick (BA Euroflyer), Newcastle (easyJet), Munich (Lufthansa) and Prague (Eurowings).
Kittilä Airport will gain new scheduled services from Amsterdam (Transavia Netherlands), Brussels (Brussels Airlines), Liverpool (Easyjet) and London Luton (Easyjet).
Brussels Airlines will also launch flights from Brussels to Kemi-Tornio Airport for the first time.
At Ivalo Airport, a new direct route from Munich will be introduced by Discover Airlines for the winter season.
Air Baltic will launch new routes to Kuusamo Airport from Berlin, London Gatwick and Riga, and will also operate selected flights from Hamburg and Manchester. In addition, Eurowings will begin services between Berlin and Kuusamo.
Finnish carrier Finnair will once again operate the largest number of flights to Lapland airports during the coming winter season.
Helsinki Airport strengthens its position with new long-haul connections
“Helsinki Airport continues to strengthen its position as a hub between Europe and Asia, as well as an important transfer airport for tourism travelling to Europe. The new services operated by Emirates and Qatar Airways provide travellers departing from Finland with extensive onward connections to Asia, Africa and Australia via the Middle East’s major hub airports. Finnair will also begin operating direct flights to Australia,” says Vuori.
Qatar Airways returned to the route between Doha and Helsinki Airport earlier this summer and will operate daily flights throughout the winter season. Emirates, which launched its daily Dubai service at the beginning of October, will likewise be serving its first full winter season.
Finnair is expanding its network for the coming winter by launching scheduled flights to Melbourne, Australia, on 24 October. Compared with last winter, new additions to its route network also include services from Helsinki Airport to Luxembourg, Stavanger, Turin and Umeå. Within Finland, Finnair will begin operating flights from Helsinki Airport to Turku and Tampere in October, strengthening regional connectivity to global destinations via Helsinki Airport. In addition, Finnair’s services between Helsinki Airport and Lapland airports will increase significantly during the winter season.
Helsinki Airport will also gain a new direct connection to Tromsø for the winter season, as Norwegian launches flights to northern Norway in November.
