Christmas is always white in Lapland. You are sure to experience a fairy-tale Christmas, thanks to trees covered in snow, the polar night, and the blue light typical of midwinter. If you are lucky, you may even get to see the Northern Lights.

If you are still trying to decide what to do this Christmas, why not book a trip to Lapland? All destinations in Lapland offer plenty of things to do around the holiday season.

Hotels serve traditional Christmas dinners, greatly appreciated by those who are too busy to make everything from scratch at home. You can enjoy a Christmas dinner at the restaurant or order it to be delivered to your rented cottage, for example.

Santa is obviously very busy at Christmas as he has so many places to visit, including Lapland hotels, where he delights the children staying there. Many resorts organise activities for the little ones, from reindeer or snowmobile rides, to Christmas crafts and Christmas story-telling.

You can join carolling events where everyone gets to sing beloved Christmas songs, and some resorts even organise the traditional Christmas church service.

Northern Light alerts on your mobile phone

Northern Lights would make your Christmas in Lapland even more magical.

Available throughout the entire Lapland region, the Levi Northern Lights app can inform you of any imminent Northern Lights by sending a message to your mobile phone. You will get the alert 1–2 hours before the lights are visible in the area you are staying.

Sample destinations:

The following lists a few destinations that have some availability for Christmas at the time of writing this article (end of November):

Santa's Hotel Aurora in Lusto offers a standard double room with a sauna for EUR 175/night, including breakfast and the Northern Light alert.

Pyhä still has some cottages and log cabin apartments available. The prices range from EUR 100/apartment and EUR 110/cottage per night. All have a sauna and a well-equipped kitchen.

Hotelli Pyhätunturi is located right next to the slopes and ski tracks. They still have some availability: for example, two can stay from 23 to 27 December for EUR 550. The price includes breakfasts and use of the hotel's sauna and gym facilities.

Apartment hotel PyhäSuites offers accommodation for the same period, 23–27 December, for EUR 687.00. The apartments can accommodate six and come with their own sauna and kitchen.

Levi still has many cottage options available for Christmas. For example, a Karhunvartija cottage can be yours for EUR 780 from 23 to 26 December. The price includes two ski passes, bedding, towels, and cleaning after you leave.

If you spend Christmas at Levi, you can enjoy the Christmas market and book Santa to visit your cabin.

Ylläs has several availabilities for the Christmas season. A few km from the ski resort, Ylläsjärvi offers you cottages for 4–6 people at EUR 600–800 per week. This winter's novelty at Ylläs is 50 km of winter cycling tracks.

All of these resorts are easy to reach from Helsinki Airport: Pyhä is 128 km from Rovaniemi Airport and Luosto 110 km. The distance from Kittilä Airport to Levi is only 14 km and to Ylläs 45 km.

You can read more about the Christmastime accommodation options from the ski resorts' own sites.

And what's best: at Christmastime, all slopes and ski tracks in Lapland are in top condition! Wishing you a white Christmas!
