SAS will start operating flights from Tampere-Pirkkala Airport to Malaga on 13 October 2018. The route will be operated on Saturdays with SAS’ environmentally effective Airbus 320neo aircraft.

“SAS’ new route from Tampere to Malaga is good news for both Tampere-Pirkkala Airport and Finavia. Tampere-Pirkkala Airport is currently undergoing a development project worth EUR 15 million that aims to increase the airport’s capacity and ensure safe traffic even as the volume of flights grows,” Finavia’s Airport Director Mari Nurminen says.

In 2017, a little over 1,220,000 passengers travelled to Spain from Finavia’s airports. 155,000 of those passengers flew to Malaga. Within the last five years, the number of passengers to Spain has increased every year—last year by 14 per cent.

“The Pirkanmaa and Central Finland areas have great potential and need for direct flights to Malaga from Tampere-Pirkkala Airport. We believe the route will be attractive to passengers travelling in both directions. The golfing community has also been pleased with this scheduled flight. For example, golfers in the Central Finland area can now fly directly to play in the sunshine from their local airport,” says a delighted Marja Aalto, Director of Air Transport Development at Business Tampere.

“The schedule for the new, direct Tampere-Malaga flight suits leisure passengers extremely well. We also opened the route earlier than scheduled so that it is possible to take advantage of the flight already for the autumn holidays. In addition to Malaga, we operate four daily flights to Stockholm from Tampere,” explains Anders Wahlström, SAS’ Head of Sales for Sweden and Finland.

SAS explains that this spring it was the first airline in the Nordic countries to enable high-speed internet access onboard its short- and medium-haul aircraft. The quick, satellite-based internet access works from the departure gate to the arrival gate and enables, for example, online streaming services on your own mobile device.
