Finavia Corporation - information on the use of the state aid received in line with EU objectives and national obligations linked to the green and digital transformation

Finavia launched the first Energy and Climate Programme in 2008. Since then, Finavia has cut CO2 emissions due to its own operations from 35,000 tonnes in 2012 to 8,860 tonnes in 2022.

In 2019, Finavia renewed its Energy and Climate Programme and signed the Airports’ Council International Europe (ACI/E) commitment to net zero carbon emissions by 2050. In 2022 Finavia decided to proceed even faster and is aiming to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2025 at the latest. Net zero emissions means that CO2 emissions from our operations at airports will be so small that we can capture them from the atmosphere.

Sustainability is a key part of our strategy and part of the day-to-day operations throughout the organisation. Finavia is building its carbon management and reduction on the experience gained within the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme by ACI/E.

All our electricity is sourced as Nordic wind power. Today we use 100% renewable diesel in the road-registered vehicles. We will move to using of 100% renewable fuel (motor fuel oil) in all our machinery and power generation. We will also reduce the use of fuels by replacing our vehicles with electric ones.

Currently half of our airports are heated with renewable wood-based fuel. We will switch to renewable district heating power as soon as the Finnish Government has implemented the new registry of certificates for guarantees of origin of green heating power.

For the residual emissions we will currently purchase carbon avoidance credits and switch gradually – as emission decrease – to carbon elimination credits from project fulfilling the high-level criteria of the ACA guidance.

We are already implementing these measures and will intensify them from 2023 onwards, gradually covering all our 20 airports. We will first focus on Lapland Airports and Helsinki Airport following by the rest of the regional airports in following years.
