Finavia has been awarded EU funding for a large-scale electrification project for apron operations at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. The aim of the project is to reduce emissions from parked aircraft and to support the transition of the entire airport ecosystem towards lower-emission operations. The EU support covers up to 30 per cent of the project, amounting to a total of €5.625 million of the overall investment of €18.75 million.

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport achieved net zero emissions for its own operations already in 2024. The electrification project now being launched will particularly enable other stakeholders within the airport community – such as airlines and ground handling companies – to reduce their emissions. By providing efficient, EU-compliant opportunities for the use of ground power and pre-conditioned air at Helsinki-Vantaa, Finavia is promoting the transition of the entire aviation value chain towards lower-emission air transport.

The project will involve the construction and commissioning of solutions enabling the supply of ground power and pre-conditioned air (PCA) to parked commercial aircraft. This responds to EU legislative requirements whereby major airports must provide ground power and pre-conditioned air at aircraft stands equipped with passenger boarding bridges by the end of 2030. At the same time, renewable energy production and storage will be increased to ensure that the airport’s energy infrastructure can cope with future peak loads.

"The Helsinki-Vantaa electrification project is one of Finavia’s most significant environmental investments in recent years. It supports the ability of airlines and ground handling companies to reduce their emissions and to build more sustainable air transport," says Jani Jolkkonen, Finavia’s Director responsible for safety, technology, infrastructure and the environment.

According to current plans, the project will be completed by autumn 2028, well in advance of the EU regulatory deadline at the end of 2030.

Towards sustainable aviation

Finavia’s electrification project plays a significant role in reducing aviation emissions in Finland. When parked aircraft can in future use ground power and pre-conditioned air instead of their own on-board generators, local emissions will be reduced considerably.

"EU funding strengthens our ability to carry out long-term climate work and ensures that Helsinki-Vantaa remains among the most advanced and sustainable airports in Northern Europe," Jolkkonen continues.

As the owner of the airport, Finavia has developed its airports so that their infrastructure also supports the sustainability targets of other companies operating at the airport. One example is the provision of charging stations for electric vehicles across the airport area. At Helsinki-Vantaa, electric vehicle charging points are available for passengers, employees and businesses operating at the airport.
