An animation shows how flight connections and passenger volumes have grown since Helsinki airport opened.

The number of flight connections from Helsinki Airport has grown tremendously over the years. During the year 1952, the year the airport opened, it was possible to fly directly to a handful of destinations including Turku, Stockholm, London and New York.

In 2017, direct flight connections from the airport totaled at 145 destinations.

Passenger numbers have also grown over thousandfold. In 1952, almost 18,000 passengers travelled through Helsinki Airport, while in 2017 that number was 18.9 million.
