Finavia has received international recognition for the steel structure of Helsinki Airport’s terminal extension. The winner of the European Steel Design Award 2023 was announced in Amsterdam on 12 September 2023.

“We are proud that the revamped Helsinki Airport is receiving international recognition. This award is a great achievement, and there are many operators we would like to thank for their successful cooperation with us. Helsinki Airport is an impressive calling card for all of Finland,” says Henri Hansson, Finavia’s Technical Director.

The terminal extension of Helsinki Airport won a steel award in the steel structure design competition of the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS). The winner was chosen by a panel of judges.

The terminal extension of Helsinki Airport won the Steel Structure of the Year award in 2021.

The steel frame of the terminal building was constructed using mainly concrete-filled steel composite columns and beams. An exception is the new departures hall, where the diamond-shaped steel composite columns support a truss with a span length of 48 metres.

Outside the building, an overhang with a steel structure has been completed, with a maximum span length of 20 metres. In all, the beams span approximately 3.9 kilometres, and the other steel structures of the building weigh about 2,400 tonnes in total. In addition to the frame, steel has been used extensively in the facades and additional structural sections.

“Designing and building Helsinki Airport’s terminal extension has been a historic project, and, at Finavia, we are very proud of the impressive result, which showcases Finnish work and expertise,” Henri Hansson says.

The terminal extension is part of Finavia’s extensive development programme at Helsinki Airport. The development programme will be completed in autumn 2023.
