Challenging winter conditions in Finland are affecting air traffic at Helsinki Airport on April 23, 2024. Exceptionally difficult weather is causing flight delays and cancellations, as ensuring safety means airport operations and flight preparations take longer than usual.

We kindly ask air passengers to be prepared for possible delays and to follow the information provided by their airline. Due to the challenging conditions, the number of arriving aircraft has been limited. We are doing everything we can to minimize the impact of the weather on flight schedules.

On the night between Monday and Tuesday, freezing rain fell at Helsinki Airport which turns to ice almost immediately when it hits the ground. As a result, runway de-icing and aircraft wing de-icing must be done much more than usual for the time of year. In addition, the very heavy snowfall that began early on Tuesday morning slows down operations on the apron and runways. The snowy conditions on the airport apron make it difficult to handle luggage, which may cause longer-than-usual baggage retrieval times. Airlines are responsible for luggage.

At Finavia's airports, safety in air traffic is never compromised in any situation. Careful and safe operation is the starting point in challenging weather conditions as well.
