Latvia’s national airline, Air Baltic, launched a direct flight route between Riga and Oulu at the end of March. The connection, which started as a summer-season route, has proven popular, and the airline has announced it will continue operating the route during the following winter season as well.

The new Riga–Oulu connection, launched on March 30, is set to continue. Less than a month after opening the route, Air Baltic announced on April 22 that it will continue operating direct round-trip flights from Riga to Oulu Airport during the upcoming winter season as well.

In Air Baltic’s strategy, the primary purpose of the Oulu route is to expand international travel opportunities for Northern Finland. Passengers departing from Oulu can conveniently reach numerous destinations across Europe and beyond via Air Baltic’s hub in Riga.

“It has been nearly a month since the launch of direct flights between Oulu and Riga, during which time we have seen demand grow steadily and interest in the route remain strong. For this reason, we are pleased to extend the route to year-round operations. The route offers passengers a fast and convenient connection to Riga as well as seamless onward flights to more than 80 destinations across Europe through Air Baltic’s network—opening up a wide range of opportunities for both business and leisure travelers,” says Mantas Vrubliauskas, Deputy Vice President of Network Management at Air Baltic.

At Finavia, the positive news strengthens confidence in the demand for the route and its future development.

“The expansion of Air Baltic’s Riga–Oulu route into a year-round service is excellent news for the accessibility of the Oulu region. It is great to see that passengers have already discovered the new connection, and we believe its popularity will continue to grow during the winter season, when demand for destinations in Northern Finland is increasing,” says Petri Vuori, SVP, Route Development at Finavia.

In Oulu, the news of the route’s rapid transition to a year-round service has naturally been warmly welcomed.

“We are extremely pleased that airBaltic has decided so quickly to continue flights and to offer a connection from Oulu via the Baltics to the rest of the world, as well as to city and holiday destinations, also during the winter season. Of course, the route works in both directions, and we hope that increasing numbers of travelers will find their way to Oulu via this connection as well, even though our primary hope is naturally that the year-round service will become well established,” says Jyrki Kemppainen, Key Account Manager responsible for tourism at BusinessOulu.

Further information and flight tickets are available on the airline’s website.
