Passengers are requested to use the airport’s schedule displays or an available mobile device or computer to monitor the gate and schedule information concerning their flight.

Flight information and passenger announcements made throughout the terminal will be discontinued from the beginning of June. Announcements at the departure gate and its surroundings, as well as public emergency announcements, will remain unchanged.

- A similar practice has been adopted at most major airports in Europe, so most passengers at Helsinki Airport are already familiar with the operating model, states Heikki Koski, Vice President of Helsinki Airport at Finavia Corporation.

Koski recommends that passengers verify their boarding time from their boarding pass immediately after check-in. Airport displays and Finavia’s online service and mobile application provide information on when you should go to your gate and when boarding begins.

He emphasizes that announcements concerning passengers who arrive late will no longer be made as announcements for the entire terminal.

Boarding usually begins 30 to 60 minutes before the scheduled time of departure. The number of passengers on the flight is one of the factors affecting when you have to be at the gate. The bigger the plane, the earlier the boarding will usually start.

The new practice is related to the Silent Airport project implemented by carriers and the airport. The aim of the project is to improve the comfortability of the waiting areas and to reduce the stress caused by traveling. The objective is to minimize the background noise and sense of hurry at the terminal by reducing the number of announcements.

Up-to-date flight information via websites and the mobile application

The I’m Departing page contains constantly updated information. This is how it works:

• Search for your own flight using your destination, flight number or IATA code.
• Click on the Show Flight Details button.

The departure time and gate of your flight are displayed at the top of the page, and the information will be updated based on information from the terminal’s flight information displays. The service is available for smart phones, tablets and computers.

You can also download the Helsinki Airport mobile application, which allows you to select your own flight and receive updates on the flight’s status. The application is available for iPhones and Android and Windows phones as well as iPads.
