Icelandair flies from Helsinki to Reykjavik all year round. Learn about the airline through our six facts.

1. The Icelandic airline, Icelandair, flies under the code FI. At Helsinki Airport, Icelandair's check-in can be found in Terminal 2.

2. A pioneer in aviation, the Icelandic flag carrier was founded in 1937 under the name Flugfelag Akureyrar. Iceland’s central location enables a practical connection between Europe and North America, so the airline has had plenty of passengers.

3. In 1944, the airline got its first competitor in Iceland, Loftleiðir. The competition went on until 1973, when the two companies were merged, and the new airline was named Flugleiðir. A couple of years later, the company was renamed in a more international vein, and it became Icelandair.

4. The company’s hub airports are Keflavik Airport (KEF) and Akureyri Airport (AEY). From these two airfields, Icelandair flies to more than 25 destinations all over Europe and to about a dozen destinations in Canada and the United States. 2018 will be a year of growth for Icelandair, as during spring alone the company will open five new destinations in North America.

5. Since the 1960s, the airline has encouraged passengers stopping over in Iceland to stay in the country a little longer. The company has launched the Icelandair Stopover Pass, which allows passengers flying across the Atlantic with Icelandair to spend up to seven nights in the country for no extra airfare.

6. The airline’s latest aircraft acquisitions includes a large number of Boeing 737 MAX 8 and 737 MAX 9 aircraft, which will join Icelandair’s fleet over the next three years. The first one was the long-awaited Boeing 737 MAX 8, which flew its inaugural flight from Iceland to Newark Liberty international airport near New York on Friday, 20 April 2018.
