Waiting to get on your plane? Don’t sit at the departure gate and stare at the runway. Here are some ways to pass the time.

You’ve checked in your bags and claimed your boarding pass. Now, you have a few hours before departure.

Fortunately, there’s plenty to do at Helsinki Airport to stave off boredom. If you’re waiting to get on your plane, you can do so much more than merely sit at the departure gate and stare at the runway. Here are some ways to pass the time.

1. Go on a guided tour

Take a closer look at what goes on behind the scenes at Finland’s main international hub. Guided tours are offered for a small fee for groups of up to 30 persons. For more information, and to book your slot, please fill out the inquiry form

2. Get a haircut

If you need a trim before your flight, Helsinki Airport’s grooming services will make sure that you step out in style. Sit back and enjoy a professional haircut at M Room Men's Barber (Terminal 2, arrivals hall 2A) for some much needed pampering.

3. Hang out at the terrace

Plane spotters and selfie takers, take note: There’s a terrace you can visit free of charge at Helsinki Airport. All you need to do is head to the top of the office building overlooking Terminal 2. Think of all the photos you can take!

4. Stretch those limbs

Open 24 hours and accessible to all passengers, Helsinki Airport's Kainuu Lounge (Gate 31) is a great place to kick back while waiting for your boarding announcement.

With décor inspired by the Kainuu region, which borders Northern Ostrobothnia, North Karelia and Northern Savonia, the lounge has wooden chairs made from trees felled during storms. The Kainuu Lounge also has a Book Swap where you can pick up reading material or leave tomes for fellow passengers to enjoy.

5. Keep the kids busy

Helsinki Airport’s four colorful play areas (Gates 16, 20, 30, and 38) give restless children a chance to stretch both their muscles and their imaginations, and parents the opportunity to catch their breath.

These facilities have suitable equipment for both older and younger kids, and the children’s room near Gate 31 is complete with a microwave and a separate toilet for nappy changes. Access is free of charge.
