The super winter for tourism in Lapland is underway, and it surely can be seen at Finavia's airports: more flights are landing in Lapland than in years. In order to better serve the growing passenger volume in Kittilä, Finavia has modernised airport services.

Finavia renovated the former smoking areas at Kittilä Airport for new purposes. The smoking area located in the departure area was transformed into a Finnish design store which sells Finnish high-quality products, ranging from handbags to reindeer skin drums.

In the arrivals hall, the smoking area was changed into the shot bar “Drop in” which is open according to selected flights.

Currently, there are clearly designated smoking areas in front of the terminal and in the gate area for flights departing outside the Schengen area following the security check.

The airport's restaurant services were also improved, and departing passengers can now enjoy hot meals. The range includes stir-fried chicken and vegetables, French fries and burgers, toasts and salads.

“Hot meals are an excellent addition to our airport services. Now, passengers can enjoy a tasty meal while waiting for their flight,” says Kimmo Liukkonen, newly appointed manager of Kittilä Airport.

Before the Christmas season, Kittilä pharmacy opened a branch at Kittilä Airport. Its range of products have been selected according to the needs of passengers. The cafeteria, including its medicine cabinet, and the design store are open according to departing flights. They and the shot bar “Drop in” are operated by Lapland Hotels.

New charging points for electric cars – with more to come

In addition to the new cafeteria and shop services, there is now an ATM in the departures lobby for cash withdrawals and charging points for electric cars have been built in the parking area. More charging points will be built later.

“In this way, we are able to serve our customers better than before. This new range of services gives us a good start to next year when traffic volumes are expected to grow even further. Kittilä Airport is an excellent hub towards the magnificent Levi and Ylläs ski resorts,” Liukkonen says.

The terminal of Kittilä Airport was modernised in full in 2015. Special attention was paid to the comfort of the waiting area by, for example, making a number of rocking chairs available to passengers. Finavia has invested over €35 million in Lapland's airports in 2014–2016.
