Lufthansa 50 years at Helsinki Airport
People & Aviation
Lufthansa's first flight to Finland arrived from Frankfurt via Hamburg to Helsinki Airport on April 6, 1968. Finavia and Lufthansa celebrated the 50 years milestone together with passengers to the date.

"Lufthansa is one of the world's largest airlines and an icon in Europe. Some 650,000 passengers per year fly with them from Helsinki Airport. Lufthansa is a very pleasant partner for us, so we look forward to the upcoming decades" says Petri Vuori, VP Route Development in Finavia.

In 1968, Lufthansa had 65 airplanes, with a little less than five million passengers and 84 destinations. The first trip to Helsinki Airport was flown with a brand new Boeing 737-100.

In 2018 Lufthansa's 728 aircrafts fly 130 million passengers to 343 destinations, four in Finland. From Helsinki Lufthansa flies to Frankfurt and Munich. It also has routes to Kittilä, Ivalo and Kuusamo in northern Finland.

"We are the only European five-star airline. Finland is a very important market for us. I want to thank all of our partners, such as Finavia, for your constant support, and our customers for being loyal to us and trusting us. Let's celebrate!, says Lufthansa's Christopher Zimmer, General Manager Sales, Finland & Baltics.
