International Civil Aviation Day is celebrated annually on 7 December to reinforce awareness of the importance of air travel to society. At the same time, Finavia celebrates the anniversaries of two of its airports.

Finavia will raise the Finnish flag on 7 December 2022 and celebrate International Civil Aviation Day at its airports throughout Finland.

International Civil Aviation Day reinforces awareness of the importance of air travel and its social and economic benefits for the modern world, society and people. Aviation has changed travel and business permanently and contributed to building connectivity between people for decades.

Finavia's airports offer hundreds of routes to Finnish people. Flying makes travel possible to almost anywhere in the world in less than 24 hours. International Civil Aviation Day is an excellent time to celebrate past achievements and look to the future: our aim is to make air travel possible for the Finnish people, even a hundred years from now.

The importance of International Civil Aviation Day is highlighted at present as aviation industry operators are committed to reducing emissions and playing an active role in mitigating climate change. Finavia's goal is to reduce its emissions at all of its 20 airports and bring emissions as close to zero as possible.

Anniversaries celebrated at Finavia’s airports

This year, Finavia has celebrated Helsinki Airport’s 70th anniversary. The Helsinki Airport history touris an example of how the significance of Helsinki Airport and its history has been highlighted throughout the year.

In December 2021, Finavia opened the renewed terminal at Helsinki Airport, featuring beautiful departure and arrivals halls, modern security control facilities and a travel centre, as well as renewed commercial services. During the anniversary year, passengers have had the chance to familiarise themselves with the new facilities.

The anniversary year culminates on International Civil Aviation Day with the Finnish flag flying at all airports.

International Civil Aviation Day also marks the beginning of the anniversaries of Ivalo and Oulu airports for Finavia, to be celebrated throughout 2023. Ivalo and Oulu airports will celebrate their 80th and 70th anniversaries, respectively.
