Finavia’s new sustainability programme 2026-2028 focuses on sustainability themes that are material to the company and effective. The focus areas of the sustainability programme are climate and nature, people and good governance. As a result of its long-term and ambitious climate work, Finavia has been able to significantly reduce the emissions generated by its own operations. In the new sustainability programme, the focus is on reducing emissions throughout the entire value chain.

Finavia’s sustainability comes from the company’s basic mission of connecting Finland to the world by offering excellent services and partnerships. The company’s aim is to promote Finland’s international connectivity and attractiveness. In the rapidly changing operating environment of aviation, the company wants to promote the sustainability of the entire air traffic sector and aviation in the long term.

"Sustainability is one of Finavia’s values, and we have been working systematically to promote the sustainability of aviation for years. Through the international Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme that is broadly used in the industry, we are committed to achieving the net zero target at all of our airports. As a result of long-term work, 17 out of 20 of our airports have already achieved the ambitious net zero emission target, including Helsinki Airport and Lapland airports. With the new sustainability programme, our emission reduction targets are increasingly focused on reducing emissions throughout the entire value chain of aviation,” says Jessica Diktonius, Senior Vice President, Communications, Marketing and Sustainability.

The sustainability programme supports the new strategy launched in autumn 2025. The sustainability efforts are increasingly focused on the areas where Finavia has significant control: improving its own energy use and managing the environmental impacts of airports. In practice, the next level of sustainability efforts means, for example, the determined continuation of reducing our own energy consumption throughout the airport network, as well as increasingly effective reduction of the impacts of substances used in aircraft de-icing and anti-icing and in anti-skid operations in the airport area on the waterways near airports.

At the same time, Finavia continues its sustainability efforts in the areas of social responsibility and good governance in, for example, the development of the well-being of the personnel, safety culture, equality, sustainability expertise and sustainable partnerships.

The sustainability of the aviation industry is promoted in the long term. In the sustainability programme, the focus is on reducing emissions throughout the entire value chain. Finavia continues active cooperation with its stakeholders and participates in the aviation industry’s development projects to reduce emissions. The technological shift of the aviation industry is also reflected in the new sustainability programme. The company participates in the innovation of new fuel solutions and the promotion of their use as motive power solutions for aircraft and ground equipment. For example, the suitability of hydrogen as an energy source for the airport’s winter maintenance equipment was tested at Helsinki Airport during a pilot project in January 2026. This project will help assess how similar solutions can be utilised in the future in the energy transition of aviation.

Three focus areas of the sustainability programme

The sustainability programme consists of three themes: climate and nature, people and good governance. The sustainability themes that are material to Finavia have been identified through dialogue with stakeholders and in accordance with the principle of double materiality, taking into account both the sustainability impacts of operations and the related financial risks and opportunities. The programme compiles Finavia Group’s joint targets and the indicators to be monitored annually.

Key objectives of the programme:

Climate and nature

  • We actively aim to reduce the climate impacts of aviation by promoting the reduction of emissions throughout the value chain.
  • We protect biodiversity by investing in water management: we reduce the impacts of runoff water on the waterways near airports.
  • We certify the forest assets we own.

People

  • We prevent occupational accidents.
  • We increase the diversity of our personnel.
  • We invest in the local communities of our airports: we participate in launching the New Aviation Museum.

Good governance

  • We follow ethical business principles.
  • We commit our partners to the Code of Conduct for suppliers.
  • We increase the sustainability expertise of our personnel.
