Fintraffic Air Navigation Services and the international technology company Indra Navia AS have signed an agreement on the implementation of a remote air traffic control solution. The project will start in September. The aim is to build and deploy a technological environment that facilitates the provision of air traffic control services remotely. The solution will be deployed in phases between 2030 and 2032.
Remote air traffic control facilitates the provision of air traffic control services from a single location for several airports. According to the plan, air traffic control for the Turku, Mariehamn, Vaasa, Ivalo, Kittilä, Kuusamo and Oulu airports will be transferred to the remote air traffic control model.
The remote air traffic control centre will be located in Vantaa.
The new operating model strengthens the preparedness and situational awareness of air traffic control while improving the operational reliability of airports and the continuity and resilience of the service provided to the customer. At the same time, it enables the more cost-efficient provision of air navigation services.
The remote air traffic control solution is a significant step in the digitalisation of air navigation services. It will replace the current operating environment, which consists of several separate systems, with a single integrated set-up, laying the foundation for the long-term development of services also in the future. Similar remote air traffic control solutions are currently in use in Sweden and Norway, among other countries.

Fintraffic Air Navigation Services has held change negotiations with its personnel in relation to the transition to remote air traffic control. All air navigation personnel at the airports that will be covered by remote air traffic control will be offered work in accordance with the new operating model or corresponding to their current position.
