Profitable growth and continuous improvement of operational efficiency are at the core of Finavia’s strategy. Efficiency will be increased particularly by leveraging new technologies and developing the ways of working. Through strategic development, Finavia wants to continue ensuring that the conditions are in place for safe and punctual airport operations and a high level of service.
Finavia has been developing Kittilä Airport, which is part of Lapland’s airports, based on the growth of tourism for years. The airport participated in the development programme for the airports in Lapland in 2018–2020, and Finavia invested approximately EUR 25 million in the airport. During the development programme, new taxiways, more aircraft stands and extended baggage handling facilities were built at Kittilä Airport. In addition, the terminal facilities for passengers were expanded by 2,000 square metres.
”This award is a sign of the expertise, professionalism and development capacity of the personnel working at Kittilä Airport. The seasonality of the airport places special demands on cost management, and the winter season in Lapland as a whole is a big effort for all of our personnel. I would like to thank the entire Kittilä Airport community for their cooperation, commitment and ability to create new things,” says Jonna Pietilä, Finavia’s Airport Manager at Kittilä Airport.
Finavia's Airport of the Year award
The Airport of the Year award recognises the entire airport’s personnel and partners who have worked consistently to develop the airport.
Each year, Finavia selects an airport from its 20 airports that will receive the Airport of the Year award. In 2024, the award was given to Rovaniemi Airport. The award was given for Rovaniemi Airport’s significant development, maintaining an excellent customer experience and its key role in promoting tourism in Lapland. Kittilä Airport was last voted Airport of the Year in 2021.
