Jukka Isomäki, Finavia’s Head of Parking and Ground Traffic for Helsinki Airport, says that cases involving abandoned cars are rare.

“In recent years, the number of abandoned cars at Helsinki Airport has been low. We’re talking about one or two cars a year here.”

Cars can be parked in Finavia's parking areas for a maximum of 45 days if the parking has been reserved in advance. For longer periods, customers are asked to contact Finavia's parking information service.

It is also possible to drive directly into Helsinki Airport's parking facilities and outdoor areas without a reservation, in which case the cameras in the area will identify the car’s registration.

“If the car has been parked at Helsinki Airport for an extended period of time without notification and we cannot contact the owner, we will notify the City of Vantaa Parking Authority about the car.”

The City of Vantaa moves the cars away from Helsinki Airport and is then responsible for their storage. If a car is not collected in time, ownership of the car transfers to the City of Vantaa.

“We do our best to get in touch with the owner of the car in good time. We almost always manage to reach them and agree to have them pick up the car at the airport,” says Isomäki.
