Finavia is continuously developing the operations and services of Helsinki Airport. In early 2025, tendering for the fourth taxi lane was launched at the airport, a new pick-up point for app rides introduced and free visit time in the drop-off area in front of the terminal limited to make visiting the airport even smoother.

"The changes have been well received. Our goal has been to ensure the high quality of passenger services so that passengers have access to smooth services when arriving at and departing from the airport," says Sami Kiiskinen, Finavia, Vice President of Airport Development at Helsinki Airport.

As part of the development of ground traffic arrangements, Finavia will take over the operations of Helsinki Airport’s taxi and bus station from 1 May 2025.

Operations at the taxi station have become clearer

Only four contract partners following Finavia's competitive tendering process have been operating at Helsinki Airport’s taxi station from the beginning of the year. The competitive tendering for the fourth open taxi lane has calmed down operations at the taxi station and has been praised by passengers.

“Now that all the lanes are operated by the contract partners, it is easier for passengers to compare taxi services, which has improved customer satisfaction,” says Kiiskinen.

App rides and pre-ordered taxis that do not have a contract partnership based on competitive tendering with Finavia will pick up their customers from the new pick-up area in the P2 parking hall, to which there is direct access from the terminal’s arrivals hall. Signs in the terminal will direct arriving passengers to the pick-up area.

Dropping off passengers to the airport has become smoother

Approximately 4,000–5,000 cars visit the drop-off area intended for dropping off passengers at Helsinki Airport daily, of which 98 per cent stay in the area for less than eight minutes, after which the visit becomes subject to a fee. There are less than one hundred cars a day that pay a fee for a visit to the area exceeding the eight minute limit.

"The majority of passengers use the area for a short stop and to say goodbye to the passenger – exactly for the purpose that is intended. Misuse of the drop-off area, such as long-term parking in the area, has decreased significantly during the early part of this year, which has made arriving at the airport smoother," Kiiskinen says.

If the visit time in the drop-off area is less than eight minutes, driving through the area will not require any action from the driver. If the visit time exceeds the eight-minute time limit, a fee of five euros for each starting five minutes (5 €/5 min) will be charged for the excess time. The accumulated amount is displayed on the exit screen when leaving the area. The fee for the excess time must be paid on Finavia’s website within 48 hours.

The operating models for the parking of passengers with reduced mobility also apply in the drop-off area. If a passenger with reduced mobility needs more than 8 minutes but less than four hours to visit the drop-off area, the visit can be confirmed as ended free of charge at Finavia’s information desk in the terminal’s arrivals hall.

For longer parking, such as for a visit to the terminal, we recommend that you use our parking areas near the terminal, such as parking halls P1 or P2 or short term parking areas.

The transfer of the taxi station and bus station to Finavia will not result in any changes for passengers

Entering into force at the beginning of May, the change will concern the cooperation between professional drivers and Finavia and will not be directly visible to airport passengers. In the future, operating in the airport’s four taxi lanes will not require a separate driver agreement, but drivers agree on driving rights with their contract company that operates at the airport and acts as a contract partner with Finavia. Similarly, professional drivers using the bus station will contact Finavia directly in the future.
