Waiting at Helsinki Airport presents an opportunity to catch up on your favorite book – and some peace and quiet.

Whether you want to dive into a good old-fashioned book or crave a quick, time-tested option like magazines, waiting at the airport presents an opportunity to catch up on your reading. Here are some ideas to keep in mind when you have extra time before your flight begins boarding and the urge to entertain yourself with the written word strikes.

1. Head to the Book Swap

Bookworms, especially those looking for something to read before their flight, should head to a unique spot in Helsinki Airport. Located in the Kainuu Lounge (gate 31), the Book Swap lets passengers pick up books free of charge. At the same time, they can bring their own used books to the Book Swap point and leave them for other travelers to enjoy.

The idea for the special corner was first suggested by frequent flyers. In 2011, Finavia and Finnair sent eight Quality Hunters around the world with the mission of enhancing the airport experience. The Book Swap, established in 2012, remains one of the most popular innovations.

2. Suomalainen Kirjakauppa and WHSmith are here to serve you

Hardcover, paperback or magazine? Whether you’re waiting to board or on a layover, adequate reading material is essential in passing the time.

At Helsinki Airport, there are two Suomalainen Kirjakauppa outlets (Gates 14 and 27) that sell books in Finnish, Swedish and English.

WHSmith (check-in area of Terminal 2, Arrivals hall 1, Gates 15, 29 and 53), meanwhile, carries newspapers and magazines alongside sweets, small travel accessories, hygiene products, toys and games.

3. Sample some Finnish literary treats

If you’re looking for something to bring home from Finland, but not inspired by the usual souvenirs, why not grab a book by a Finnish author? From a classic set in the 1940s – during the Continuation War between Finland and the Soviet Union – to clever depictions of Finnish social awkwardness, there’s bound to be a title (or three) to catch your eye.

4. For those in need of some peace and quiet

While immersing yourself in the hustle and bustle of the airport is part of the fun of traveling, sometimes it can get a bit much. Whether you need to concentrate on your work, take a nap or read in solitude, Helsinki Airport has spots where you can calm down your nerves.
