Carbon emissions

The emission of carbon dioxide directly or indirectly into the air, water or the ground due to human activity. Includes carbon dioxide emissions, climate emissions, greenhouse gas emissions

Hiilineutraali

Carbon neutral

The amount of carbon emissions sequestered is equal to the amount produced. This is achieved either by reducing emissions and/or by compensation.

Kompensaatio

Compensation

When carbon emissions are produced, an equal amount of carbon emissions is sequestered elsewhere. Includes residual compensation

Net zero carbon

Carbon emissions are equal to the emissions sequestered by carbon sinks.

Hiilinielu

Carbon sink

A process, action or mechanism that sequesters carbon emissions from the atmosphere. Carbon sinks include forests, plants and peatlands.

Hiilinegatiivisuus

Carbon negative

Carbon emissions are lower than the emissions sequestered by carbon sinks.

Uusiutuva energia

Renewable energy

A form of energy derived from renewable sources such as sun, wind, running water, air, geothermal energy and bioenergy.

Guarantee of origin

Electricity and heat are produced using, for example, renewable energy, nuclear power, waste heat or cold.

Carbon footprint

Total direct and indirect carbon emissions caused by humans.

Circular economy

An economy that is based on sharing, renting and recycling instead of continuously making new products.

Biodiversiteetti

Biodiversity

The diversity of nature, which includes animal and plant species as well as habitats. Biodiversity loss means that animal and plant species and habitats are endangered.

Airports Council International’s (ACI) international carbon management programme for airports, in which Finavia participates.

SDG

Sustainable Development Goals

Finavia’s sustainability programme takes into account the UN Sustainable Development Goals. They aim at the eradication of poverty and at sustainable development by taking into account the environment, the economy and the human being.

GRI-standardit

Global Reporting Initiative Standards

The international standards for sustainability reporting applied by Finavia, which define the content to be reported and provide instructions on how to present the information.

Value chain

The air traffic value chain consists of thousands of different actors in Finland and around the world: airlines, airport companies and other companies operating at airports, such as air navigation and ground handling companies, catering and maintenance companies, retail and restaurant companies, aviation safety authorities, etc. They are all closely interlinked and provide services together so that planes can take off and land and passengers can depart and arrive.

Whistle blowing

A reporting channel for reporting suspected misconduct and wrongdoing related to the company’s activities. The channel enhances the prevention and detection of fraud and corruption.

Biological Oxygen Demand

Biological oxygen demand is the amount of oxygen consumed by microbes while they decompose organic matter. For example, the biodegradable propylene glycol used as a de-icing agent for aircraft consumes oxygen when it is decomposed in water.
